Barnum’s Brooke Dorn picked up 28 set assists and five ace serves as the Bombers swept a match at Silver Bay 25-15, 25-19, 25-11 Thursday, Oct. 8.
Dorn was aided by junior Lacie O’Leary’s 13 kills and senior Aline Lekander helped defensively with eight digs for Barnum.
Coach Corina Newman said the team started a little slowly in the nearly empty gym in Silver Bay, but soon found their footing.
“It took us a little while to get started,” Newman said. “It’s very hard with the morale in the gym and not having fans cheering to pick the girls up, but we got going in the second game and pretty much started playing our game.”
O’Leary’s play demonstrated her improvement as a player and her teammates are beginning to take notice, according to Newman.
“She’s a great leader, and the kids respect her and are starting to look up to her,” Newman said.
The communication on serves and during play improved, Newman said, in the final two games. She credited the return of Lekander to the court with helping improve communication. The senior sat out the first game of the match.
“Aline came back in on the second and third games and that helped, her being a senior helped that leadership on the court,” Newman said.
Barnum is next scheduled to play at Cromwell-Wright at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20.
