The Carlton County Stampede, a semiprofessional football team, will host their home opener against the Midwest Nightmare Saturday afternoon, May 18, at 4 p.m. at Jim Erickson Field in Carlton.
Semiprofessional football is an offseason organization for non-paid players over the age of 18. The first-year Stampede (0-2), a member of the eight-team Midwest Premier Football League, has lost to the Twin Cities Titans and the defending MPFL champion Minnesota Sting this season.
According to general manager Christopher King, the Stampede -- comprised of about 50 players -- has several players who are league leaders statistically.
Gates open at 3:30 p.m. for Saturday's game against the winless Nightmare. Concessions will be available. A raffle will also support cancer awareness.
