Softball: Timely hitting lifts Lumberjacks
Cloquet batters came through with a win when it mattered in an eight-inning, 7-6 home win over North Branch on Friday, May 3.
The Lumberjacks found themselves down in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kiana Bender stepped to the plate. The junior shortstop connected on a pitch a little high in the strike zone and hit a home run to tie the game at 6-6.
Two innings later, senior Keagan Anderson hit an RBI single to win the game for the Lumberjacks.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Paul got the win for Cloquet, allowing no hits over the final two innings and striking out two in relief of starter Lucy Sinkkonen.
Spartans shut out Lumberjacks
Superior pitcher Mady Stariha vexed Cloquet hitters in a 3-0 win Tuesday, May 7, in Superior.
Lumberjack hitters managed just five hits over seven innings and Stariha struck out four batters.
Dana Jones hit a double, but it was the only extra base hit for Cloquet.
Pitcher Josie Steen pitched well, allowing just eight hits and two earned runs over seven innings.
Cloquet (10-2) is next scheduled to play at Princeton at 4 p.m. Friday, May 10.
