Prep report: James hat trick gets Spartans off to winning start

Duluth East held on for a 2-0 win at Park Center.

SUPERIOR — Darrel James had a hat trick for Superior as the Spartans boys soccer team defeated Hibbing 4-1 in both teams' season openers on Thursday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Wyatt Tischler had the other goal for the Spartans.

Duluth East 2, Park Center 0

Senior Evan Tomczyk scored early and freshman Will Smith scored late for the Greyhounds, who overcame Park Center's homefield and territorial advantages much of the way to win in their first match of the season.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 3, Hermantown 1

Thomas Flanagan scored late in the first half for the Hawks, but it was the Red Knights who came away victors at Corey Veech Field at Centricity Stadium.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Anthony Village 5, Proctor 1

Eden Giswold scored the game's opening goal for the defending Section 7A champions, but it was all Huskies the rest of the way, as St. Anthony's Anna Isaacson scored a hat trick.

Hermantown 1, North Branch 0

Natalya Hooey scored the game's only goal for the Hawks in the second half on a day when both teams put seven shots on target.

Zimmerman 4, Duluth Denfeld 1

Adell Wormuth had the lone goal for the Hunters. Cayley Larsen made four saves.

CROSS COUNTRY

Ashland Invitational

Northwestern swept the boys and girls team standings at the season-opening Ashland Invitational on Thursday.

Solon Springs' Dylan Taggart (17 minutes, 27.7 seconds) was the top boys finisher, with Emmett Johnson of Northwestern in second and Isaac Dickenson of Solon taking third.

VOLLEYBALL

Greenway 3, Mesabi East 0

Kyra Williams led the Raiders offensively and defensively with 15 kills and 12 digs. Ava Johnson added seven kills and three aces.

Jenna Hursh of Northwestern (fourth place) was the top girls' finisher.

Deer River 3, Hibbing 2

The Bluejackets rallied from two sets to none down but couldn't get over the top in the fifth, as the Warriors earned a 15-10 victory in the fifth.

Brooke Siekkinen had 14 kills and Jerzie Gustafson 11 kills for the Bluejackets.
