Prep report: No-hitters for Raptors' Mitchell, Rebels' Christy

Carlton/Wrenshall sophomore pitcher Abby Mitchell recorded 14 of her 15 outs via strikeout en route to a no-hitter in a 10-0 home win over Cook County in Polar League play Tuesday at Chub Lake Field in Carlton.

At the plate, Carlton/Wrenshall broke through with a one-run first inning before using small-ball tactics to explode for a combined nine runs in the third and fourth innings to put the Vikings away for good.

The Raptors offense was led by Kennedy Siiter, Janae Sjodin and Mitchell, who each recorded a pair of hits in the contest.

Golden Bears outfielder Joey Westby robbed East's Rylee Stevens of a potential game-tying home run to end the game.

The visitors scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Vallie Nosan and Kylie Zwak had three hits apiece for the Greyhounds. Eveleth-Gilbert's Lydia Delich had three extra-base hits and drove in two runs in addition to pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts. She allowed two runs on nine hits. Lauren Lautigar was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Fresh off her first career ho-hitter on Monday vs. Grand Rapids, Hermantown pitcher Natalie Vitek allowed just one run on three Hibbing hits. She struck out six and walked four.

Avery Farrell, Ella Seboe and Jadyn Lind had two hits apiece to pace the Hawks' attack.

Aune Boben allowed three runs on nine hits for the Bluejackets and had a double at the plate.

Sarah Christy was one pitch away from a perfect game on Tuesday. The only Gobbler to reach base got on via a wild pitch on strike three. Christy struck out 17.

She also had a two-hit game offensively, as did teammate Sandra Ribich.

In their other game Tuesday, ML/WR dropped Crosby-Ironton 13-1, getting three hits (two doubles) and two RBIs from Hallie Klavu.

Hanna Hovland and Jada Brown had 3-for-3 days as the Hunters rolled over their cross-town foes. Hovland doubled twice and drove in three, while Brown doubled once and drove in two.

N/SS clinched the Lakeland-East conference title behind a one-hitter from pitcher Zoey Vaara, who also went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs. Annika Patrick had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Robert Olson threw a five-hit shutout for the Spartans, striking out seven. Nathan Maki had a pair of hits and an RBI for Superior.

Abe Ahlberg threw his second no-hitter of the year, and the team's fifth of the year, and struck out 15. He homered for the fourth time in five games.

Postseason play for the spring 2022 season is under way as Cloquet prevailed by the narrowest of margins in a Section 7A team quarterfinal.

Ethan Lavan prevailed comfortably at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1 over the Gobblers' Jamison St. Clair. The teams split four singles matches with Aitkin winning both of its points in three-setters, while Cloquet prevailed in two of three doubles matches. Jonah Bryant-Nikko and Ethan Doty edged Joey Hasken and Wyatt Crowther 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the closest of the doubles matches.

Cloquet, seeded fifth, advances to face Rock Ridge in the semifinals in Hibbing on Thursday.

On the other side of the bracket, Hibbing cruised past Duluth Marshall 6-1, taking all but one game over the four singles matches.
