Prep report: Hermantown, Cloquet stage 35-run slugfest

The teams combined for 17 runs in the fourth inning alone.

When Hermantown met Cloquet in football this season, the teams combined for 21 points, a 14-7 Cloquet win on Oct. 1, 2021. When they met in baseball on Wednesday, they put even more on the scoreboard.

Hermantown knocked off Cloquet 20-15 at Cloquet in a game with 14 extra-base hits.

Hermantown was already up 7-1 after three innings, but then hung nine runs in the top of the fourth. Cloquet then responded with eight in the bottom half of the inning to make it 16-9. The Lumberjacks outscored the Hawks 5-2 in the fifth inning to keep the mercy rule at bay and help see the game to a natural conclusion.

Most prominent in the very busy scorebook were Hermantown's Carter Gunderson, who was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and scored three times, and Chase Carlson, who went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Marshall Hayes paced Cloquet, going 2-for-4 and driving in three.

Duluth East 16, Cloquet 3

Dean Hudoba and Isaac Lisi both had two hits and drove in three as the Greyhounds rolled to victory. Max Saxama earned the win, scattering six walks and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Kollin Bonneville led Cloquet with a pair of hits.

Barnum 7, Wrenshall 3

Caleb Hautajarvi homered and he and Eli Gilbertson had two hits apiece for the Bombers, who got 10 strikeouts over five innings from Orrin Rosenau.

Silver Bay 14, Northeast Range 4

Jake Stadler homered for the Mariners and drove in four, while Manor Ollman struck out five in three innings and drove in three runs for his own cause.

SOFTBALL

Hermantown 13, Duluth Marshall 0

The Hawks' Lindsey Ewer one-hit the Hilltoppers over five innings and added two hits, including a triple. Josie Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
