Prep report: Spartans shut out in opener

The Solon Springs baseball and softball teams collected big wins on Tuesday.

SUPERIOR — Despite the wind and rain Tuesday, the Superior girls soccer team opened its season with a 6-0 home loss to Big Rivers conference foe Rice Lake.

The Warriors’ Natalie Nolin scored the first goal, but Kallahan Bowman added five more in the Spartans loss.

Superior (0-2) is next scheduled to play at Washburn at 5 p.m. Monday, April 18.

Softball

Northwood/Solon Springs 15, Cornell/Lake Holcombe 0

Northwood/Solon Springs’ Bailey Monson had a triple and three RBIs in a four-inning, 15-0 blowout of Cornell/Lake Holcombe Tuesday.

Pitcher Zoey Vaara allowed just two hits and struck out six batters in the win for Solon Springs.

The Eagles picked up four runs in the first inning, but it was a 10-run outburst in the third inning that put the game out of reach.

Maddelyn Swanson had a four-hit day and collected two RBIs of her own in the win for NSS.

Baseball

Northwood/Solon Springs 13, Washburn 0

Northwood/Solon Springs’ Abe Ahlberg allowed just one hit over four innings and struck out nine batters in the Eagles’ five-inning, 13-0 home win over Washburn Tuesday.

Ahlberg, Brady Krmpotich and freshman Jared Schultz all had two RBIs in the rout.

Washburn not only struggled at the plate, they committed six errors and only six of the Eagles’ 13 runs were earned.
