Conservation Officer Scott Staples (Carlton) and K9 Schody assisted the local sheriff’s office with searching for a juvenile who allegedly took a lot of pills and fled into a wooded area. The juvenile was located and turned over to medical personnel.

Time was spent checking ATV/off-highway motorcycle riders and hunting activity in the area. Enforcement action was taken for equipment and registration violations.

After receiving a call of hearing shots in an area just before dark, a residence was checked and an adult male was found trying to hang up a deer in his garage. The man admitted to shooting the deer with a high-powered rifle from behind his house. He stated he didn’t need food; he just wanted some tasty venison to eat. He is facing charges of taking deer out of season and transporting an illegally taken big-game animal. A deer, his rifle and his ATV were all seized.

CO Jacob Willis (Brookston) attended training at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in St. Paul for a good portion of the past week.

Equipment maintenance was attended to and complaint phone calls were fielded.

Preparation for the upcoming firearms deer season continues.

CO Jeff Humphrey (Cromwell) conducted patrols on county and state lands for various hunting and off-highway vehicle activity during the past week.

Humphrey also investigated a deer-shooting complaint and dispatched a car-hit deer.

Several questions/complaints were received about the upcoming firearms deer season.

CO Dustie Speldrich (Willow River) checked small-game hunters and bough harvesters in the Nemadji State Forest. She received information about portable stands left on wetland managementy areas. She investigated a complaint of archery hunting deer over baited areas. Several questions were answered about youth hunting during the firearms deer season if they harvested a deer during the youth hunt.

Nuisance-beaver calls were taken and questions about concealed carry while hunting were answered.

The Aviation Unit assisted with a dispersed camping issue in the Nemadji State Forest.
