Cloquet-Esko-Carlton senior Thomas Heren won the Gitchi Gummi Invite by more than a second over his nearest competitor Thursday, Jan. 24, at Mont Du Lac Resort in Superior.

Heren finished with a combined time of 1:03.33 over two runs — 1.25 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Luke Conway of Minneapolis Washburn.

The win gives Heren momentum heading into the Section 7A meet Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Heren is looking to return to state after falling during the section meet in 2018.

Heren made it to the state meet in 2016 and 2017, finishing 12th as a freshman and 15th as a sophomore.
