Dennis Conklin's youth baseball is good. Make that, real good.

This weekend, Conklin, a youth baseball coach from Cloquet, will take his 14-year-old Northern Minnesota Stars club to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the annual USSSA Kickoff Classic April 15-17.

The highly-advertised regional baseball tournament welcomes a boatload of all-star squads to Iowa's capital city. Teams from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and the Dakotas will be in the field, with the top two finishing clubs advancing to the USSSA 14 Major World Series in mid-July.

And Conklin is confident his boys can make a lethal run at things.

"I promised them that I would give them a shot - this is their shot," Conklin said confidently, noting that his team finished second in Iowa and third in Kansas a summer ago in national play. "It wouldn't surprise me if they qualify for the World Series. Boy would that be a lot of fun."
