Esko pitcher James LeGarde allowed just two hits and one run over five innings and struck out five to lift Esko to a 13-1 win over Taconite on July 31 in the Division II Junior American Legion District 8 Sub-State Tournament in Esko.

With the win, the Eskomos clinched a berth in the Junior Legion State Tournament in St. Charles.

Pitching was key for Esko’s run through the sub-state tournament, with Tyler Koskela allowing four hits and striking out 10 in a 6-2 over Brookston and Noah Furcht striking out 10 more batters in a 4-0 win over Virginia.

LeGarde was also strong at the plate for the 17 and under team, hitting a home run in the title game against Taconite and scoring at least one run in each of the first two games of the tournament.

Esko will play Morris in the first round of the state tournament at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9.
