Construction will start this week on a new, 2,000-square-foot visitors' center at Jay Cooke State Park outside Carlton, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Thursday.
The park will remain open during construction, but parking may be limited and there is likely to be more noise in the area. Most of the work will be done from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but on Wednesday work could continue at night and into the early morning, which could bother campers.
The DNR will contact campers who have reservations for Sept. 1 and offer them the opportunity to cancel and get a full refund or change their reservations at no charge.
The new visitors' center is expected to be open in 2011 and will include a registration desk, new store and disability-compliant restrooms. The new center will be adjacent to the River Inn, which will be remodeled as part of this project to include a larger area for interpretive programs.
