Dylan Johnson of Cloquet scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead Wisconsin-Superior to a 5-2 victory over Northland Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, in their WIAC season opener before 114 at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland.

UWS’ Matt Francois opened the scoring with a goal at 2:33 in the first period but he was answered less than a minute later by the Lumberjacks’ Connor Taylor. UWS took control with a pair of late goals in the period with Johnson scoring on the power play at 16:17 and Coltyn Bates scored at 19:37.

Jackson Breton pulled Northland to within a goal with a tally at 8:08 in the second before Johnson and teammate Zach Bannister helped put it away with goals late in the third period.

Nick Althaus had 29 saves for the Yellowjackets (3-1 overall, 1-0 WIAC) while Viktor Wennberg and Chri Curr combined on 32 saves for the Lumberjacks (2-3-1, 0-1).

UWS continues WIAC action at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Hoff, Falcons soar past Saints

Reining WIAC player of the week Callie Hoff of Hermantown got the scoring started at 3:51 in the first period and Wisconsin-River Falls never looked back en route to a 6-0 nonconference victory over St. Scholastica in women’s nonconference hockey before 441 in River Falls, Wisconsin.

Lori Huseby of Babbitt and Ashlea Arvidson had 22 saves apiece for the Saints (4-2) while Sami Miller had the 14-save shutout for the Falcons (7-0).

CSS opens its first season in the MIAC at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, when the Saints take on Augsburg in Minneapolis.
