Cloquet-Esko-Carlton peppered Grand Rapids goalie Carter Clafton with 32 shots, but none found the back of the net as the Lumberjacks fell 3-0 at home Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Clafton posted his second shutout in a row and fifth in the last 10 games to lead the Thunderhawks to a season series sweep of CEC.
Grand Rapids’ Cooper Brodzinski scored at the 3:48 mark of the first period, with Jack Peart and Easton Young scored power play goals in the second and third periods, respectively.
The Thunderhawks penalty kill play was the key to the win, stopping the Lumberjacks on all four of their chances. In contrast, Grand Rapids was able to score on two of its three power-play opportunities.
CEC goalie Jacob Walsh made 30 saves, but the Lumberjacks couldn’t solve Clafton or the Grand Rapids defense.
CEC (13-11-1) will begin the Section 7AA tournament Tuesday, Feb. 18.
