Girls hockey: Rebels start season 1-2
Under a new coach, the Moose Lake Area girls hockey team has seen its season begin with one win in its first three contests.
Chris Gamst takes over this season from Joe Mohelsky. His Rebels won the debut game for their coach 6-5 at home against North Shore on Nov. 13.
In that game, the Rebels took a 5-0 lead only to see North Shore rally to tie the game 5-5. Then Abby Painovich scored the game winner with 3:29 left in the third period to send Moose Lake Area home as winners.
The goal completed a hat trick for Painovich, who scored in each period.
Lexi Bonneville scored a pair of power play goals for the Rebels, who finished 3-for-5 with the extra skater, and Gabby Gamst scored a shorthanded goal to give the home team a goal in each phase of play. Jo Wekseth stopped 27 of 32 shots in goal.
Three nights later, the Rebels fell 7-1 to Holy Family at home. Outshot 48-14, the Rebels' goal came from Bonneville, with Wekseth making 41 saves in goal.
Having to play on back to back nights, the Rebels lost 6-1 to Dodge County on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Gamst scored the team's goal at the 9:39 mark of the third period, with Wekseth busy again in goal, making 33 saves on 39 shots.
The contest ended a string of three straight home games to open the season for the Rebels, who are at Cloquet-Esko-Carlton on Tuesday, Nov. 20, as this issue of the Pine Journal went to press.
The team is then idle over Thanksgiving until returning to action Saturday, Nov. 24, at home against Princeton.
