HERMANTOWN HAWKS

Hermantown and Grand Rapids are the class of the area — again — and Duluth East hopes to claw its way back to the top of Section 7AA.
The reigning state champions lost arguably the most talent of anyone in the state, but they also have plenty of returning talent to make their way to their 13th Class A state tournament in 14 years.
The Hawks will have to replace all but one player from the top line of last year's state championship squad; their first game is at 8 p.m. Dec. 2 at Cretin-Derham Hall.
No. 2 seed Cloquet will battle top seed Grand Rapids in the Section 7AAA final for a second-straight season.
The only difference at the top of this year's meet is that Rock Ridge's Lexi Lamppa was replaced as individual section champion by her twin sister Maija.
The Rangers' Damian Tapio ran for three touchdowns in a big win at South Ridge.

Northwestern completed an unbeaten season with a road win at Bloomer, while Hermantown got a key section victory vs. North Branch.
The Carlton volleyball team hosted its fifth annual Cancer Night benefit match with proceeds donated to 2002 Hermantown grad Mike Anderson, who is battling brain cancer.
Section tournament play began for local teams in Class AA.
