Duluth golfer Taylor Sundbom had already won pretty much all the big local golf tournaments from Cloquet to Two Harbors but there was one biggie he had yet to conquer: the Northland Invitational.

That ended Sunday when the 27-year-old defeated his buddy, Matt Mellin, in match play, winning the 96th annual event 5-and-3 at Northland Country Club.

It’s been the “Summer of Sundbom” as the former Hermantown High School golfer, also won his fourth Arrowhead Invitational at Ridgeview Country Club to go along with his fourth Cloquet Invitational in July, completing the rare private club trifecta.

One will have to search the record books to see if that’s been done before.
