In a chaotic contest at Ordean Field, Hermantown scored the last of three touchdowns in the last 70 seconds of the game for a shocking 28-25 win over Duluth East.
Michael Lau's desperation heave on an untimed down at the end of the game landed in the hands of Beau Janzig 39 yards away as the Hawks snatched a victory out of the hands of the Greyhounds, who had taken the lead with 8.5 seconds to play.
The game was plenty exciting even without the dramatic finale, as East held a 19-0 lead in the first half behind a pair of TDs from Austan Orvedahl.
Gavin Blomdahl of Hermantown cut into the deficit with a touchdown run in the second quarter, then added another in the third, but the Hawks did not take the lead immediately. Their first attempt to go ahead was stoned on fourth down at the 2-yard line, but East fumbled the ball back with 3:24 to play. Blomdahl followed with his third score of the game, from short range to go ahead 22-19 with 1:10 to play.
East quickly moved the ball into Hermantown territory, reaching the red zone with less than 30 seconds left and scoring what it thought was a game-winning touchdown on a slant to Connery Wiecks from 3 yards out with just 8.5 seconds to play.
East was penalized on the last timed down to set up Lau and Janzig's heroics.
