For the second week in a row, Two Harbors senior Karsen Holm scored a game-winning touchdown.

Holm broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run to give to hand the Agates a 38-34 win at Esko Friday, Sept. 14.

“I was just following my lineman and the whole opened up like it was designed to,” Holm said. “It was perfectly executed by the linemen, all I had to do was walk through the hole — it was wide enough for a semi.”

Holm also caught a go-ahead touchdown pass from Cole Komarek to lead the Agates past Pine City a week ago.

Esko had a chance to take the lead back with less than three minutes to go, but Two Harbors stopped Eskomo quarterback Dylan Vinje on a fourth and goal play from their own 6-yard line.

“It was a big call, it was a fourth down play and the game was on the line,” Esko coach Scott Arntson said. “It just boils down to I didn’t make the right call.”

Vinje led Esko with 119 yard rushing and three touchdowns. He was also 5-for-6 with 162 yards through the air — including a 92-yard strike to Preston Lowe to give the Eskomos the lead with 8:20 to play.

“We thought that they would keep the ball in the quarterback’s hand and that’s what they did,” Two Harbors Coach Tom Nelson said. “He’s a very good athlete and that’s what they did. He’s slippery as all get out, but luckily we had him bottled up.”

Holm struck on the Agates’ next play from scrimmage to give Two Harbors the lead for good.

The game was a “track meet,” according to Nelson. The game featured only one punt by Esko. Two Harbors was only stopped by an interception as time expired in the second quarter and on a fourth down play in Esko territory in the third quarter.

Nelson was particularly impressed by his offensive line that featured five sophomores.

“I think they wanted to prove a point,” Nelson said. “We talked to them about it, we said ‘Nobody is going to respect you, we’re starting five sophomores.’ But they want it so bad — they’re the epitome of offensive linemen. They just want to work.”

Holm led Two Harbors with 149 yards rushing and the Agates amassed 346 yards as a team.

Two Harbors (2-1) will play at Virginia at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.

Esko (2-1) will play Mora at home at 7 p.m. next Friday.
