Cloquet's Sheff doubles up CCC titles

A member of the Cloquet Country Club (CCC) for 42 years (since he was 9), Cloquet's John Sheff has had some stellar months of golf, but this past August may rank as one of his best.

Sheff bested all competitors en route to winning the CCC Club Championship for an unmatched 13th time on Aug. 10. Two weeks later, he and his son, Evan, won the annual Dan Sheff Memorial Parent-Child event, in honor of his deceased father.

John Sheff, 51, beat Steve Gault in 18-hole match-play for the club title, including a close semifinal victory over former National Hockey League star Jamie Langenbrunner. Gault, a finalist for the past two summers, also edged defending champion Aaron Young in the semifinals.

According to CCC Assistant General Manager Matt Carlson, an employee in his 15th year, roughly 60 golfers competed in the two-day event.

Carlson said even more played in the always-popular parent-child competition, noting 68 teams participated in the two-day weekend affair.

While John and Evan Sheff won the event with their 133-stroke total, John and his daughter, Arica, impressively placed runner-up as well, finishing with a 136 to tie with Langenbrunner and his son, Mason.

John Sheff said earlier this week it was his and Evan's third title. John and Dan won it, too, including the final round they ever played together, before his father’s passing a few weeks later in 2002.

“This is a great event - kids and parents of all ages spending hours together in friendly competition,” Sheff said earlier this week. “A long tradition for many.”

Carlson said many of the events - consistent in numbers - have now slowed for an always-busy private course that overcame a stressful summer of weather.

“The weather was tough, but we got everything in - we were very happy with our numbers," said Carlson, noting the CCC will remain open at least until about October. “Usually until the snow flies,” he added.
