Esko skiers Alex DeRocher and Sarah Severson both competed in Wednesday afternoon's Minnesota State Alpine Ski Meet among a total of 177 racers at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minn.

DeRocher, a junior in his third state meet, missed a gate in his first run, finishing with a two-run time of 1 minute, 34.11 seconds.

Severson, a sophomore, entering state for a second straight time, spilled downhill during her opening run, timing in at 2:20.38.

Each finished lower in the results, but their accomplishments should not be overlooked, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Coach Ryan Zimny said.

"Alpine racing is all or nothing," Zimny said. "It's always a success to get to ski at state."

The CEC Nordic team also skied to the finish of its winter at the Spirit Mountain junior high championships Tuesday in Duluth.

Coach Les Martin noted top skiers were Parker Sinkkonen, as well as Emma Waugh, Anja Maijala and - junior high winner - Erika Fox.

Fox, a Carlton eighth-grader, carried CEC at last Thursday's Section 7 meet, completing the Giants Ridge 10.5-kilometer pursuit in 40 minutes, 38.8 seconds, one spot shy of today's state meet.

"It's the worst spot you can have," Martin said. "Erika was close; it just wasn't in the cards. This is a pretty young team, but nothing says they all won't do well in the future years to come."
