MANKATO, Minn. - The Mavericks battled the Mavericks as Minnesota State and the University of Nebraska, Omaha fought to a 1-1 draw Friday at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato in the first contest of the nonconference home-and-home men's hockey series.
MSU sophomore wing and Carlton native Justin Jokinen beat UNO freshman goaltender John Faulkner 8:40 into the first period with a high shot from the left side. The goal was Jokinen's second of the 2009-10 season.
A low shot on the glove side by UNO junior wing Matt Ambroz slipped past MSU freshman goaltender Phil Cook 17:40 into the first period tying the game.
Two periods and one overtime period of scoreless play left the contest with a tie score.
MSU, which competes annually with UNO for the Maverick Cup, out shot UNO 30-26 and went zero-for-four on the power play, while UNO went one-for-four. Cook concluded the game with 25 saves and now stands 1-0-1 on the year for the Mavericks. Faulkner had 29 stops and owns a 6-5-3 mark.

MSU, now 9-8-2 overall, finishes the series in Omaha at Qwest Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
