Silver Bay’s Mason Ollman scored 37 points as the Mariners rallied from 15 down to top Carlton 65-59 on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Carlton took advantage of poor shooting by Silver Bay to jump out 25-10 lead with about 3 minutes remaining in the first half. The Mariners had trouble early dealing with the dual threat of Bulldog center Ben Soderstrom’s size and touch around the basket combined with the speed and athleticism of guard Matthew Santkuyl.

Late in the half, Ollman was fouled on a drive to the basket. The shot fell and Ollman hit the free throw to complete the 3-point play.

The sequence helped Ollman find his range — hitting two 3-pointers and scoring 13 straight points for Silver Bay to cut the Carlton lead to 30-23 at half time.

Ollman’s hot shooting would continue in the second half, where he scored 22 points and hit five from long range. Mariner teammate Riley Tiboni also heated up in the second half, scoring 20 of his 26 points and hit six 3-pointers in the final 18 minutes.

“We really picked up our defense and that’s where most of the scoring came from,” Ollman said. “Our set offense — they were pretty good at defending it — so we just had to rotate the ball in transition and we got open shots.”

Santkuyl scored 13 of his team-leading 19 points in the second half and helped the Bulldogs to a 59-54 lead with about 2 minutes remaining.

Ollman was fouled on a made 3-pointer and converted the four-point play to cut the lead to one. Tiboni followed it up with another shot from beyond the arc to give the Mariners their first lead since the early going and forced Carlton to foul to stop the clock.

Ollman and Tiboni each hit a pair of free throws to put the game away for Silver Bay.

In addition to Santkuyl’s 19, Soderstrom scored 17 and Ryan Gray had 13 for Carlton.

Silver Bay (2-1) is next scheduled to host Wrenshall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
