Girls basketball: Panthers too much for FDL Ojibwe
For most of the first half, Fond du Lac Ojibwe played well and held South Ridge in check, but a swoon late in the first half and a sluggish second resulted in an 86-43 win for the Panthers on Monday, Feb. 4, in Cloquet.
The Ogichidaag fell behind 12-2 early, but then went on an 8-2 run, establishing a pattern that would repeat through most of the first half. South Ridge would build an eight- to 10-point lead, with Fond du Lac Ojibwe closing the gap.
With about five minutes remaining in the half, the Ogichidaag cut the last to three with about five minutes to play at 27-24 following a 3-pointer from Namida Reynolds.
From there, the Panthers went on an 18-3 run to close the half, powered by three consecutive steals by eighth-grader Jillian Sajdak that resulted in six quick points for South Ridge.
In the second half, the Panthers extended their lead to 33 before Solai Mohr hit a 3-pointer to make the score 60-30 early with about 13 minutes to play.
South Ridge sophomore Courtney Sajdak led all scorers with 23 points and Celia Olesiak scored 20, hitting five 3-pointers in the process, for the Panthers.
