Carter Clafton’s 22 saves made goals by Kodi Miller and Joey DelGreco stand up in Grand Rapids’ 2-1 victory over visiting Duluth East in a high school boys hockey game Thursday night.

The Thunderhawks improved to 6-5-1 on the season and dropped the Greyhounds to 7-7.

Charlie Kleinschmidt’s third-period goal lifted the Hilltoppers to the nonconference win at Moose Lake.


Classic set for Saturday

The daylong Lake Superior Classic is set for Saturday at Duluth East High School.

The seven games kick off at 10 a.m. with a matchup between Grand Rapids and Proctor.

The other boys contests pit Superior vs. St. Cloud Apollo; Duluth Denfeld against Fridley; Pine City and Greenway; Hermantown and Mound Westonka; and host Duluth East against St. Paul Central.

The lone girls game matches Mountain Iron-Buhl and PIne City.

East enters the tournament 10-2 after a 75-61 victory over Superior on Thursday night.

Grand Rapids 63, Bemidji 60

John Sutherland poured in 38 points and made four 3-pointers to lead the Thunderhawks to a three-point home win.

Northwestern 73, Chetek 71

Four Tigers scored in double figures to lead the host team to the Heart O’North Conference victory, its seventh consecutive overall win.

Hermantown 72, Cloquet 62

Peter Soumis scored 19 points as the host Hawks won the Lake Superior Conference game.


Hermantown 62, Cloquet 46

Elly Schmitz’s 21 points and five 3-pointers keyed the host Hawks’ LSC win over the Lumberjacks.

Hermantown improved to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

Superior 57, Duluth East 56

The Spartans outscored the host Greyhounds 5-4 in overtime to win the nonconference game.

Hibbing 48, Esko 45

Haley Hawkinson hit two free throws to break a 45-45 tie and defeat the host Eskomos.

Aila Gabel’s 3-point basket with 36 seconds to play had tied the score.

The Bluejackets held Esko to 15-for-59 shooting (25.4 percent) from the field.
