Sophomore Logan Orvedahl returned the opening kick off 90 yards for a touchdown on Thursday and later returned an interception 60 yards for another score to help Moose Lake-Willow River down Hermantown 26-19 in the high school football season opener in Willow River.
After Orvedahl’s score to open the game, Hermantown quarterback Peter Suomis scored from 6 yards out and again from 12 yards out in the first quarter to give the Hawks a 13-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
MLWR quarterback Mason Olson tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Adam Olson in the second quarter to cut the lead to one point at half time after the two-point conversion failed.
Mason Olson gave the Rebels the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game with a 33-yard toss to Brady Watrin in the fourth quarter.
The Rebels still led 20-13 when senior Logan Privette put heavy pressure on Soumis, causing him to get rid of the football. Overdahl intercepted the ball and ran 60 yards to ice the game with 1:40 left. Hermantown added another touchdown in the closing seconds to complete the scoring.
Mason Olson finished the game 6-for-18 with 11 yards and Orvedahl led the Rebels with 60 yards rushing. Watrin led the team with 93 yards receiving.
MLWR is next scheduled to play Friday, Sept. 6, at Barnum.
