The Superior High School boys hockey team started strong, but the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks finished stronger with a 7-3 victory Thursday, Jan. 24, at Wessman Arena.

The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the opening 5:34 of the game, and eventually led 3-1 heading into the third period. That's when the Lumberjacks scored six unanswered goals, including four in the opening 3:13.

CEC sealed the victory with an empty-netter to improve to 10-9 overall and 3-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.

The Spartans (15-4, 3-1) got off to a great start as Gunnar Hansen scored at 2:48 with help from Cayden Laurvick, who then scored when his shot went in off the back of CEC goaltender Owen Carlson.

It went to 3-0 less than a minute later when Ian Johnson scored after nifty passes from Taylor Burger and Trevor Dalbec.

The Lumberjacks got one of the goals back on Aaron Moore's unassisted goal with 2:10 left in the opening period.

Four of CEC's goals were scored by Gavin Rasmussen. Drake Nordine and Jon Baker also scored for the Lumberjacks, who got 24 saves from Carlson and Wyatt Senich.
