Want to support Esko athletics?

The Esko Sports Alliance, completing its first year since last summer’s reorganization, has set its annual meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the RAM Insurance Building in Esko.

President Steve Knutson said anyone interested in supporting Esko athletic programs is invited.

The alliance raises funds to support all Esko youth and high school sports. In the past year, it sponsored the Bob Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament, the Section 7 cross country meet, the Jack Johnson Coaches Classic basketball tournament and the recent Esko Showcase track and field invitational.

Special events have included recognition of Esko’s 1975 state football champions at a game last September and the 1955 state basketball team at the Coaches Classic.

The alliance also acquired a 10x20-foot tent for the cross country and track teams, provided funds for postseason sports banquets, responded to coaches’ requests for equipment or material not provided by the school district and sponsored college sponsorships of $1,000 each to a male and female athlete.

Last July, after Esko Activities Director Chad Stoskopf called for community volunteers to take over alliance activities, Knutson and four other new officers were elected.  Previously, Stoskopf and his predecessor, Julian Bertogliat, had served as the alliance’s managers.

Lengths of terms for the new officers were staggered for continuity and thus Russ Davidson, vice president/public relations, is up for re-election after one year.  Officers retaining their positions are Eric Rish, vice president/administration; Scott Antonutti, treasurer; and Davis Helberg, secretary.  Stoskopf now serves as the alliance’s liaison with the school district.
