Well, it’s here, the third week of school and the kids and even some of the teachers are getting their annual colds. It seems that after being away from school all summer the illnesses stayed away, but after a couple of weeks back together the germs seem to attack our kids and staff.
A very lovely lady passed away this past week. Ruth Edna (Kunelius) Widstrom, 93, of Brookston passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. My sympathy to her daughter, Charla (Robert) Hampston, several nieces, nephews and cousins in Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, Sweden and Finland, and the hundreds of students and friends who knew and loved her.
Happy 65th wedding anniversary to a wonderful couple. Carol and Sid Davis were honored at the Catholic church Saturday, Sept. 17, with a special lunch. We wish them the best!
There are so many things to get involved in for so many of us. Here are some of the opportunities that are upcoming.
The Cromwell-Wright After School Program is up and running again this year, available to all Cromwell-Wright students. They meet Monday to Thursday right after school. There are registration forms by the office if you are interested in having your child(ren) attend any time during the school year. The program includes snack, physical activity, homework help, arts and crafts, problem-solving games, music, intercultural activities, and fun! School Readiness classes for 4-year-olds started Monday, Sept. 19, and are held from 8:25 a.m. to 3:06 p.m. Terrific Three’s classes for 3-year-olds start Thursday, Sept. 22, from 8:25-11 a.m. Early Childhood Family Education classes start Tuesday, Sept. 27. One- and 2-year-olds classes are 8:30-10 a.m., 3-year-olds are 10:30 a.m. to noon, and 4- and 5-year-old classes are 12:45-2:15 p.m. Please register early! Cromwell-Wright Yoga will meet from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 26, at the Cromwell Pavilion. Yoga is a series of stretches designed to work the whole body and help us learn about our capabilities, for all ages, men and women. For questions, call Ann Markusen at 218-428-3300.
School Picture Day has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11, with Lifetouch Studios this year. More information to follow.
The new school calendars and sports schedules are ready and at the school. Just stop to pick one up near the office.
Sunday School has resumed at area churches and all parents and grandparents of our youth are encouraged to get them there. Just check out your favorite church and get those kids there on time.
Confirmation (Walking With God) has started at Bethany Lutheran in Cromwell on Wednesdays right after school. New seventh- and eighth-graders are always welcome and if you are older and want to learn more about the Lutheran faith, please feel welcome to attend.
Bethany Lutheran in Cromwell is collecting some special items for Operation Community Connect for Carlton County from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. Items needed are jackets, boots and/or blankets! Contact Barb Lehti at 218-644-3610 or Carol Eliason at 218-644-3438 for more information. I think these things can be dropped off at any time, but call these ladies to be sure.
Mary Hakamaki has stepped up to be the new parish secretary at Bethany and Bethlehem. We welcome her to the staff. Stop in to welcome her! And we also want to thank Wanda Karppinen for her years of service to the parish. Mary has big shoes to fill as everything in the church office was handled efficiently and with lots of grace. Thanks, Wanda, for all you have done for the church and the community.
Be sure to stop in at Villa Vista to see the quilts that are on display and to also attend the Quilt “Show and Tell” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
The Cromwell Area Community Club Steak Fry will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Come for the steak and stay in town for the football game.
The residents of Villa Vista/Cardinal Court are going out for supper at Carmen’s in Cloquet Thursday, Sept. 29. You can join them by coming with or getting there around 5 p.m.
The Holy Hootenaners will be at Bethany Lutheran in Cromwell at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. Please try to come out and support this great group!
The Carlton County Retired Educators will meet at Spirits Restaurant, Carlton, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. They will order off the menu for lunch followed by a meeting. They will get an update on the recent Carlton County Fair and also on the State REAM Convention that Jennie attended. New members are welcome to attend. This group welcomes any and all retired teachers and staff from the area. Even if you taught in another county or state and are now living in Carlton County, you are welcome to attend.
There will be a Benefit Spaghetti Supper for Mike Olson who recently underwent successful heart and kidney transplants. This will take place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. This is sponsored by the Wright community.
Don’t forget that Bill and Judy Haapoja come to entertain at Villa Vista on the fourth Monday of the month at 6 p.m. This month will be Sept. 26.
