To the Editor:

The water protectors at Standing Rock have been advised to leave their campsite, to continue their prayers in their homes, and to be encouraged that the Creator has answered their prayers.

On Dec. 4, 2016 the United States Army Corps of Engineers denied the Dakota Access Pipeline permission to drill under the Missouri River. What a victory for the people of Standing Rock and their supporters!

However, the Dakota Access Pipeline has no intention of adhering to the decision. They plan to drill under the Missouri River anyway. They are waiting until January when President-Elect Donald Trump takes office. He is expected to overturn the decision to the United States Army Corps of Engineers. This is clearly demonstrated by Trump’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. The Dakota Access Pipeline and its investors aren’t interested in the laws that govern relations between the sovereign nation of Standing Rock and the federal government of the United States. They are only interested in financial gain. How sad that they are more concerned about profit than they are about the physical well-being of human life.

The people of Standing Rock and their supporters endured violence while they peacefully protested against the pipeline. The people of Standing Rock have rights. They have been bullied and their rights have been disregarded by the Dakota Access Pipeline. They have not received much support from the federal government to enforce the decision against drilling under the Missouri River. The United States government should honor the treaty with the people of Standing Rock Reservation.
