To the Editor:
When I think about Cloquet, I feel a sense of pride. This is a community with a rich history, much natural beauty and a small-town feel that provides extraordinary opportunities to many people. Our community has continued to provide adequate roadways, high quality health care, unrivaled education, a diversity of housing options, restaurant and retail experiences, ample recreation areas and more. We are a community to envy.
We have entered an age where economic strength comes down to fiscal independence as a community, and our ability to compete with comparable Minnesota towns. Neighboring communities have seized various opportunities to control their own destiny, and adopt initiatives which immediately initiate a fiscal independence. These forward thinking initiatives are securing the future for generations to come.
On Nov. 6, Cloquet has the opportunity to vote for a half-percent local option sales tax. Passing this tax his would help us be firmly in control of our city's future. Revenue generated will be used for an improved park system, infrastructure updates to I-35 and Highway 33 for further retail development, and much needed updates to our water, sanitation and sewer systems. These improvements will allow for future progress and growth.
The real effect of the half-percent local option sales tax is an estimated $1 of every $200 spent on taxable purchases in Cloquet. Medical supplies, prescriptions, food and clothing aren't taxed under current state law. This tax is a shared benefit for residents and visitors. By having improved parks and secure infrastructure, we will continue to attract businesses and a diverse group of citizens. The continuous flow of residents' and visitors' sales tax contributions will create a positive income cycle. This will secure our city as more desirable locale.
I grew up in this community and have seen us accomplish amazing feats throughout the years. I know we can pull together, across party lines, to help pass this critical local option sales tax. Please vote in favor of the sales tax, because our future as a strong and vital community depends on it.
