To the Editor:

Thank you for sharing Kobe's story (“Trapped!” in last week’s issue of the Pine Journal). I knew nothing about this subject until my little dachshund mix was caught in one in December. My whole life stopped when I was walking with permission on private land that I have walked for 10 years with my two dogs. I heard a horrific yelp and ran about five feet off the road where my Daisy was caught in some metal contraption. I screamed in horror. She was dying and I couldn't do anything about it. I ran about a quarter mile for my husband and drove back to her where she was belly up and tongue out. Somehow my husband sprang the trap and she lived.

Since that day Dec. 27, 2014, I have been trying to let dog owners who don't hunt or trap know there are serious risks in our beautiful Minnesota forests. If I had known prior to her getting caught I would have never taken our dogs on a simple walk. What a shame that I no longer can because of how trapping regulations are lacking in Minnesota. We bought 20 acres to enjoy the outdoors and now I'm scared to let them outside. This trap was about 350 yards from our house and we found four more in the same area.

So again, THANK YOU for letting others know about Kobe!
