FOOTBALL: Carlton vs. Wrenshall

7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Jim Erickson Field, Carlton

Trying to consolidate their communities' schools for years, this annual gridiron gathering has become a must-see. Expect a capacity crowd in Carlton Friday as all kinds of people from both of these tiny towns will be in attendance. This is small-school football at its finest.

Something also has to give in this District 9 White 9-Man matchup, as someone will go home with the first victory of the fall. While Carlton (0-3) is continuing to close the scoreboard gap, don't overlook Wrenshall (0-3), in its first year back to varsity football since cancelling the 2015 season due to lack of numbers. The Wrens made the Section 5 final in 2014.

FOOTBALL: Cromwell-Wright vs. South Ridge

7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Cromwell-Wright High School

Cromwell-Wright revolves around high school football, so anticipate nothing less than busy bleachers Friday in Cromwell when the Cardinals (3-0) welcome the Panthers (2-1) to town.

Owning four Prep Bowl titles (1995, '96, '98, 2010) and four more runner-up finishes, Cromwell-Wright is one of our state's most decorated 9-Man programs ever. So surely, and again with plenty of neighborhood names, the Cardinals are the favorite in this District 9 White meeting, but South Ridge relies on its own depth of athletes and is looking for the road upset.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Esko vs. Cloquet

7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Esko High School

These nonconference neighbors know each other all too well on the volleyball court. Separated by fewer than five miles, Esko and Cloquet anything can be entertaining, no matter what the sport.

That holds true here, expect an overflowing gym at the Eskomos' home next Tuesday. Esko traditionally holds a "Fill the Gym Night" when the Lumberjacks come to town. Cloquet has won the last several affairs, including some postseason eliminators. Still, Esko is seeking to avenge all that when the first ball is served up between these two.
