Thomas "Tom" H. Burggraff, age 77 of Cloquet, passed away from pneumonia and complications of COPD with his loving family by his side on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. Tom was born in Cloquet on January 18, 1941 to Henry and Lucille (Paulson) Burggraff. He grew up in Scanlon and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1959. During his time in High School he enjoyed playing hockey, football, and baseball. After school he entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany as a MP (Military Policeman) for 2 years. He was very proud of his service and considered it an honor to serve his country. Tom was united in marriage to his wife of 54 years, Sharon Lee Helin on July 25, 1964 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Tom worked at Potlatch Corporation for 42 years. He belonged to Local 97 and was very active in the union and served on the adjustment committee. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the Potlatch Quarter Century Club, and a former member of the Eagles Club. Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, being outdoors and especially enjoyed spending time at the hunting shack. He was an avid Twins fan and attended many Twins games. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing city league softball and was a very talented mechanic and welder and was capable of fixing almost anything.
Tom loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and was devoted to the care of his parents as they aged. Tom took pleasure in helping others and enjoyed taking care of his 4-legged "Boys" Pete and Ruben.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Leo and Rauha Helin; brother-in-law, Darryl Helin; and Shawn Langenbrunner, boyfriend of daughter Kelly. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Kelly and Michelle (Allen Sowl); grandson, Kyle Burggraff all of Cloquet; brothers, Carl "Bud" (Marilynn) of Esko, and Denny; nephew, Pat (Sue) Burggraff and family of Cloquet; niece, Traci (Bart) Buxton and family of Roswell, NM; several cousins and many special friends, several of which were considered family.
Visitation will be Friday, October 5, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet with a Prayer Service at 6: 30 p.m. The visitation will resume on Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Military Honors will be presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the church social hall.
