A Level 3 predatory offender convicted in 2011 of assaulting and threatening to kill his wife and two witnesses to the incident will live in Cloquet after being released Wednesday.
Steven James Hayes, 33, has completed his sentence and will reside in the vicinity of Big Lake Road and Allen Street.
James, formerly of Duluth, was found guilty by a St. Louis County jury in December 2011 of 14 charges, including aggravated first-degree witness tampering, possession of a firearm by a felon, second-degree assault, felony domestic assault, felony domestic assault by strangulation, fifth-degree assault and terroristic threats.
Hayes' firearm possession conviction was vacated in early 2017 after an appellate court found that the air-powered BB gun Hayes used in the assault was not a "firearm" as defined by state law. His second-degree assault conviction was reversed last month on the same grounds.
A detailed fact sheet on Hayes from the Minnesota Department of Corrections will be available online starting Wednesday at coms.doc.state.mn.us/publicregistrantsearch. Information also can be obtained by calling the Cloquet Police Department at (218) 829-1247.
