Wright-Cromwell News

I was honored to be one of the readers at the "1918 Readers Theater presentation" at the Encore Theater on Friday, Oct. 12, which was the exact 100th anniversary of the 1918 fires that destroyed so many lives and property in our area 100 years ago.

My grandparents were living in Red Clover Township at the time and they were able to save their little farm, but two weeks later, on Oct. 29 or there about, my grandfather, Edwin (also known as Edvin) Dahlman died from influenza. Edwin; my grandmother, Anna "Minnie" Wilhelmina; and their three children, Alice, Einar, and Wallace, had just settled on their property in the spring of 1918 after moving from 4321 Regent St. in Duluth to make their home in the country.

Edwin had managed to plow the fields around the buildings, so they were saved, but his death was one of many deaths that were the result of so much exhaustion and smoke inhalation.

Minnie and the children lived in Duluth that winter before returning to the farm in the spring of 1919 and making a go of it with the help of her two brothers, Emil and David Larson, who lived nearby.

Congratulations to our own Jason Line, a Wright native, as he earned his first National Hot Rod Association victory of the season and 50th win in his Pro Stock career Sunday, Oct. 14, in the final of the Car Carolina Nationals in Concord, N.C., according to the Duluth News Tribune.

A Chilloween Halloween Party will be Oct. 26 from 5-11 p.m. at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Watch the "Bus Bulletin" for more information. We rely on volunteers and donations to provide this free event, so contact Brenda Nyberg at 218-390-4570 if you are willing to help.
