Young man dead after attacking police car, officer with bat

On Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11:40 P.M. Duluth Police responded to a domestic call in the 400 block of North 79th Ave West on the report that a 17 year old was inside the house breaking the TV and windows. The reporting party fled the house and was waiting outside for officers to arrive. While officers were responding, numerous other calls were received from neighbors reporting windows being smashed.

As the first officer arrived, a male ran up to the squad car and began swinging a bat striking the squad car repeatedly in the windshield, front end and passenger side. The officer began reversing the car and sideswiped a parked vehicle and came to a stop. The male then swung the bat at the driver's door window shattering the glass and was continuing the attack while the officer was still seated in the squad. A single shot was fired from the officer's duty weapon and the male retreated.

The officer then radioed for medical help and he and other arriving officers administered CPR until medical personnel arrived to take over. Despite these attempts the male died at the scene.

The officer involved has been with the department for three years and has been placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure in these cases. His name will not be released at this time. .

The name of the 17 year old male is being with-held pending notification of family.

Per department operating policy, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been requested to investigate this incident. No additional information will be released at this time.
