Western Lake Superior Sanitary District rolls out plastic garden pot recycling

Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) and Carlton County officials announce that residents and businesses can now recycle their empty plastic garden pots through a new recycling program offered in the area.

Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) and Carlton County officials announce that residents and businesses can now recycle their empty plastic garden pots through a new recycling program offered in the area.

All plastic pots, polystyrene trays and plastic hanging baskets will be accepted at no charge for recycling.

WLSSD and Carlton County will offer several locations where area residents can recycle plastic garden pots. Plastic pots can be dropped off for recycling at:

  • Boreal Natives, 3934 Munger Shaw Rd., Cloquet
  • WLSSD Materials Recover Center, 4857 Ridgeview Rd., Duluth
  • Engwall Garden Center, 4749 Hermantown Rd., Duluth
  • Lake Superior Garden Center, 5137 Jean Duluth Rd., Duluth, or 2724 N. 21st St., Superior, Wis.
  • Miller Creek Garden Center, 4785 Swan Lake Rd., Hermantown.

Pots must be free of soil and metal hangers must be removed prior to drop off. Household plastic and clay pots will not be accepted in this new program.
"At a certain time of each year, gardeners in our area have large quantities of these plastic containers," said Kurt Soderberg, WLSSD executive director. "Residents have approached us about whether there are options to landfilling or stockpiling the materials. We're pleased to now say that we have an option for those interested in recycling them.

"Plastic garden pots are made from a very desirable plastic," Soderberg continued. "After collection, the plastic will be recycled and used to create items such as durable plastic lumber, 55 gallon drums, railroad ties, speed bumps, fence posts, boat docks, landscaping material and outdoor furniture."
