UW-Superior Mock Trial team places first in U of M tournament

University of Wisconsin-Superior Mock Trial teams are starting strong start this season, with one team placing first in the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Invitational Tournament held Oct. 25-26.

University of Wisconsin-Superior Mock Trial teams are starting strong start this season, with one team placing first in the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Invitational Tournament held Oct. 25-26.

Competing against teams from 13 Midwestern universities, UW-Superior Team 492 finished first after four rounds of competition with a 7-1 record. The

UW-Superior students defeated teams from University of St. Francis, Morningside College, St. Olaf College and Hamline University to claim their victory. Team members include Ed Hirsch of Skokie, Ill.; Caleb Nicholson of Mellen, Wis.; Kellie Goddard of Blaine, Minn.; George Zuchowski of Foxboro, Wis.; Cindy Strange of Duluth, Minn.; Tatiana Pronina of Russia; and Mike Beauto of South, Range, Wis.

UW-Superior's Team 493 finished the tournament with a 4-4 record. Team members are Mary Russell of Duluth; Eric Albertson of Duluth; Jake Lindberg of Superior; Alicia Kline of Reedsburg, Wis.; Andrea Nelson of Esko; Polly Sorcan of Eveleth, Minn.; and Saniya Toktogazieva of Kyrgyzstan.

The teams are coached by Dr. Maria Cuzzo and Tracy Schramm with assistance from alumni Mike Crawford and Elise Brown.

Mock Trial is an academic forensic activity that teaches students how to analyze the law and facts of a case, and to argue and present cases in a trial court. Many of the participating students are majoring in UW-Superior's Legal Studies or Criminal Justice programs. UW-Superior belongs to the American Mock Trial Association and is one of more than 350 universities in the country that take part in mock trial competition.

The UW-Superior teams compete again in two weeks at the Macalester Invitational in St. Paul.
