The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises property owners to use only blue or white reflectors when marking driveway entrances.

According to Greg Pierzina, Mn/DOT highway operations superintendent, people who are considering installing driveway markers should follow these guidelines:

  • Reflectors should be only blue or white in color. Drivers can confuse red or yellow reflectors with motor vehicle tail-lights or vehicle warning lights.
  • Reflectors should be at least 12 feet away from the shoulder of the road to reduce the chances of being covered by snow when the road is plowed.
  • Reflectors should not be placed on mailboxes or permanent posts and should be no higher than five feet from the ground.
