A 24-year-old Sawyer man suffered a gunshot injury early this morning but couldn't remember how it happened or who did it, according to authorities.

Carlton County Sheriff's deputies responded to the call at 1:46 a.m. The Carlton Ambulance took the man to Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, where he was treated for a shoulder wound and later released.

Rick Lake, investigator with the sheriff's office, said the incident happened in the Mission Road area of the Fond du Lac Reservation in Sawyer. He said the wound appeared to be caused by a small-caliber weapon but that it wasn't clear what happened.

Lake said rumors of gang involvement in the incident are so far unfounded.

"Our initial investigation hasn't revealed anything like that at all," he said. "But we still don't have that much information. We're still investigating."
