Three Duluth-area bicyclists were injured last Thursday after a woman driving a Ford Crown Victoria swerved off Highway 61 and accidentally hit them, according to Brian Belich, Carlton County Chief Deputy.

"From reading the reports, it was lucky no one was killed," said Belich.

The driver, of Saginaw, said she was blinded by the sun as she traveled just east of the Helberg Road intersection at 7:15 p.m., reports said. Four adult cyclists, three females and one male, were riding on the shoulder at the time and the woman's car swerved and reportedly hit three of them.

The cyclists, who were wearing helmets, suffered a variety of injuries, from cuts to shock, Belich said.

Two of the women and the man were transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. As of last Friday afternoon, they were in stable condition, Belich said.

Drugs and alcohol did not appear to play a role in the incident. The speed limit where the accident occurred is 55 miles per hour and excessive speed also did not appear to be a factor.

Attorneys for Carlton County are reviewing the reports to determine whether the woman will be criminally charged. The Pine Journal does not publish names unless charges are filed.
