A furious third quarter rally allowed the Cloquet football team to tie their game against Ashland on Friday night, but the Oredockers got a big turnover and a late score to take a 27-21 road win from the Jacks.

Ashland got on the scoreboard in the first quarter after a long drive was finished off by Nate Dickerson on a 4-yard touchdown run. Bob Stephenson booted the extra point, giving the Oredockers a 7-0 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first stanza.

On the ensuing kick, the Lumberjacks took over on their own 34-yard line and on the very first play from scrimmage Simon Thill started right and cut back across the grain to go 66 yards and score. Anthony Wood kicked the extra point, and just 22 seconds after Ashland had scored the game was tied at 7-7.

The Oredockers responded in kind with a long drive of their own that ended with 2:41 left in the first quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Rick Betting to Luke Debriyn. The Stephenson kick made it 14-7 in favor of Ashland.

After giving up a bunch of yardage to the Oredockers in the early part of the half, the Lumberjacks defense stiffened, but with 10 seconds remaining in the first half, Betting hit Debriyn again, this time on a 21-yard touchdown pass, to make it 21-7 after the extra point kick.

Cloquet stormed out of the gates at halftime and pounded the ball at the Oredockers in a drive that ended when fullback Taylor Kolb smashed in from the 4-yard line with 9:27 remaining in the quarter. Wood nailed the extra point to get the Jacks to within 21-14.

Less than three minutes later, the Lumberjacks tied the score when they forced an Oredocker punt and Thill again made a long dash, this time a 65-yard touchdown run with 6:53 left in the quarter. Again, Wood hit the extra point to make it 21-21.

The Lumberjacks managed to stop the Oredockers on their next drive as the quarter came to a close. Cloquet then went the length of the field and had a first down at the Ashland 4-yard line. Unfortunately, the Jacks fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Ashland.

The Oredockers then went the distance on a drive that ended when Chris Westerlund bolted in from the 15-yard line. Ashland missed the extra point for the final of 27-21.

Cloquet rushed for 206 yards and quarterback Ryan Lindstrom was 3-for-5 in the passing department which was good for 30 yards. The Oredockers ran for 273 yards and passed for 107 yards.

Simon Thill led the Jacks with 151 yards on the ground on eight attempts, which is an average of 18.9 yards per carry.

Defensively the Jacks were led by Josh Cummings' nine tackles, eight tackles each from Cody Hraban and Jake Horn, seven each from Austin Johnson and Pete Garsow, and six tackles apiece from Taylor Kolb and Thill.
