The Carlton High School Knowledge Bowl team advanced to the Minnesota State Knowledge Bowl competition for the second year in a row last weekend and came out one of the top teams in the state.

Each year Barnum High School is host to one of the larger early season track meets. The Barnum Ice Out Meet was run on Thursday last week and Two Harbors came out on top in both the boys and girls divisions. Barnum finished the highest of area schools with second in the boys division and third in the girls division.

On the boys side it was Two Harbors, Barnum, Cromwell, Wrenshall, Moose Lake-Willow River, Hinckley-Finlayson and AlBrook in the finishing order. For the girls it was Two Harbors first, Hinckley-Finlayson second, Barnum was third, Cromwell took fourth, in fifth it was ML-WR, sixth place went to Wrenshall and AlBrook was seventh.

Girls Events

Emily Gilsvik of Two Harbors captured first in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes with Wrenshall's Alyson Glumac taking second in both events. Darian Bushey of Barnum was third in the 100.

Wrenshall's Christie Bunge won the 400-meter dash, with H-F's Amanda Bergstad finishing second and Shayla Villa of ML-WR taking third.

Lisa Lymburner of H-F won the 800, while Kourtney Karppinen of AlBrook was second. Lymburner also took the 1600-meter run with Cromwell's Marlene Wester finishing second and AlBrook's Maija Fremling taking fifth.

In the 3,200 it was Kira Peterson of Two Harbors winning with Wester of Cromwell finishing second. Other local top finishers in the 3,200 were Fremling of AlBrook in fourth and Emily Peebles of ML-WR in fifth place.

The 100-meter hurdle event was won by Ashley Schwantke of H-F with Barnum's Sami Parker notching second place, while ML-WR's Natasha Dragicevich won the 300 hurdles. Wrenshall's Heidi Jurek also finished in the top five with a fourth-place finish.

The 4x100 relay was won by H-F with Cromwell second, Two Harbors third, ML-WR fourth and AlBrook fifth.

Cromwell won both the 4x200 and the 4x400 relay events. Barnum and Moose Lake finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 4x200 while ML-WR was third in the 4x400 and Wrenshall was fourth.

The 4x800 relay was won by Two Harbors, ML-WR took second, H-F was third and Cromwell was fourth.

Dragicevich of ML-WR won the high jump with a jump of 4 feet 10 inches. Lymburner was second, Ashley Collman of Cromwell was third and Sammi Parker of Barnum was fourth.

Gilsvik took top honors in the long jump with Leah Nordvall of Barnum second and Tanya House of Cromwell third.

Nordvall tipped the tables in the triple jump by winning with a final jump of 30 feet 11 inches.

Andrea Gould of Wrenshall took the title in the shot put with Jenna Sunnarborg of Barnum second, Emily Scholten of H-F third, and Katie Capriglione and Mali Fonoti of AlBrook were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sunnarborg, of Barnum, won the discus, Scholten was second, Barnum's Alycia Bonneville was third, Hannah Jurek of Wrenshall was fourth and AlBrook's Betty Suikkinen was fifth.

Boys Events

In the boys 100-meter dash it was Kris Adams of Barnum winning with a time of 11.94 seconds, Ethan Skog of ML-WR was second, Johny Richards of Cromwell took third and Brendon Menze of Wrenshall was fourth.

Adams also won the 200 with Nat Vrundy of H-F second and Skog took third.

The top local finisher in the 400 meters was Gary Jobe of Barnum who took third, David Kennedy of Wrenshall was fourth and Dillon Mattson of Cromwell was fifth.

Josh Groves and Andrew Youngren of Barnum were the two top local finishers in the 800-meter run with a fourth and fifth place finish, respectively.

Tony Fremling captured the title in the 1,600-meter run with Cromwell's Jordan Smith taking second, Tony Nixon of Two Harbors was third and Dave Conley from Wrenshall took fourth.

Fremling also blew away the field in the 3,200 with a time of 10:36.82, with Smith taking second, Hans Halverson of Barnum taking fourth and Curtis Hakala of Cromwell finishing fifth.

Zach Claflin of Two Harbors won the 110-meter hurdles, Cromwell's Adam Smith was second, Dylan Shelton of Wrenshall was third, Nick Kwapick from ML-WR was fourth and Barnum's Kory Papke was fifth.

Cromwell's Smith won the 300-meter hurdles with Chad Breile of Two Harbors second, Kwapick and Dominic Mandy of ML-WR were third and fourth and Shelton was fifth.

Two Harbors won in three relay events with Cromwell taking second in the 4x100, the 4x400 and the 4x800 events. Barnum was second in the 4x200 and they won the 4x800 relays.

Vrundy of H-F was the winner in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet 8 inches. Tyler Burggraff of Cromwell was second, Wrenshall's Jon Bartczak and John Moder were third and fourth, respectively, and Jon Williams of Barnum was fifth.

Wrenshall went 1-2 in the long jump with Menze and Moder taking first and second, Ray Jobe of Barnum was third and his teammate Kris Adams was fifth.

Dave Schnurrer from Two Harbors won the triple jump with Smith of Cromwell second, Moder of Wrenshall third, Micah Kantonen from Barnum was fourth and Dave Cisar took fifth.

Kyle Grimm of Barnum was a double winner in the shot put and discus. Vrundy of H-F was second in the shot, Brendon Menze from Wrenshall was third and Menze was also second in the discus with Matt Gunderson of ML-WR finishing fourth and Scott Cagle of Wrenshall taking fifth.
