Terry Lea Turja, 54, of Minneapolis, Minn., died Monday, July 9, 2007, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis after a courageous, life-long battle with health problems. She was born in Virginia, Minn., and attended school in Virginia, Duluth and Esko; she graduated from Esko High School in 1970. She graduated as an LPN from Eveleth Area Technical Institute. Terry spent most of her nursing career at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis. She was an advocate for handicap accessibility, affordable housing and affordable prescription drug coverage for low-income people. She was a Vista volunteer, she volunteered at Hennepin County Medical Center in the Blood Clinic and was an active member and former head of the Minnesota branch of the National Marfans Association.
Terry was preceded in death by her grandparents and her sister Nancy Gail.
She is survived by her parents, Gene and Zona (Lundstrom) Turja of Duluth; brother, Douglas (Annie) Wingo of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Patti Hamilton of Las Vegas, Jackie (Joel) Kinghorn of Esko, Bette (Cline) Sipes of Nixa, Mo., and Mary (Joel) Oustad of Bemidji, Minn.; nephews, Brian Oman and Dustin Sipes; nieces, Brianna Shunn, Megan and Rachel Oustad and Melissa and Amanda Kinghorn; and numerous wonderful friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Loring Park Building, Minneapolis.
