Suspect wanted in Cloquet shootings

Police are working to apprehend a suspect believed to be involved in two recent shootings that left one victim hospitalized.

Nicholas Joseph Ammesmaki, 26, is currently wanted by police in connection with two Cloquet shootings that occurred on Monday, May 17.

The shootings both took place at local residences, leaving one victim hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

According to a news release from the Cloquet Police Department, police units responded to the first report of shots fired at a Cloquet residence shortly after midnight on Monday. When police arrived at the scene, they confirmed the report and found that no one was injured.

Less than half an hour later, police received a second report of shots fired at a different location.

Units responded and found one victim, a 27-year-old man from Cloquet, had been shot in the leg. The victim was transferred to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

While the investigation is still ongoing, investigators believe both incidents are related and they have identified Ammesmaki as a main suspect.

According to the news release, Ammesmaki was last seen leaving the scene of the shooting in a 2003 silver Pontiac Bonneville with Minnesota license plate DWL944.

His whereabouts were unknown Monday afternoon, police said.

Residents are advised to not approach Ammesmaki as he is considered armed and dangerous.

The Cloquet Police Department is being assisted by the Fond du Lac Police Department, Carlton County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in this case.
