A St. Paul man was charged Monday in St. Louis County District Court with first-degree assault after being accused of shooting a Cloquet native and Marine veteran of the Iraq war in a residence in Duluth's East Hillside neighborhood.

Daniel Jophie Kriesel, 34, is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

David Goward Jr., 30, was shot and critically injured on July 13. Goward was shot in the heart and is in critical but stable condition at a Duluth hospital. Goward received a Purple Heart after being wounded in Iraq.

Police said robbery was a possible motive for the crime; it's believed that two guns were stolen from Goward.

Kriesel has had 21 criminal cases filed against him in Hennepin, Ramsey, Becker, Clay and Mahnomen counties -- including assault, burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, the sale of controlled substances, terroristic threats, tampering with a motor vehicle and several cases of fleeing police. He has been convicted of 10 felonies.
