The fifth annual St. Louis River Historical Encampment featured a variety of historical family-friendly events lat weekeend at Dunlop Island at Hwy 33 and the St. Louis River in Cloquet.

New this year, a colorful group of modern-day voyageurs offered a chance to paddle an authentic-looking birch bark fur trade 30-foot canoe on the St. Louis River on Saturday, July 8.

La Compagnie des Hivernants de la Riviere Sainte Pierre (the Company of Winterers on the St. Peter River)from the Twin Cities re-enact the history of the fur trade era (roughly 1700-1820) using an extension collection of fur, replica trade goods and various water craft.

The St. Louis River Historical Encampment featured period crafts, cooking, firing canons with a canon firing candy, basket-making and maple syrup making. Visitors were encouraged to ask questions and talk with artisans.18th century dancing was taught to those interested starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday as the band, Duck for the Oyster, played live in the area.
