South Terrace Elementary students ventured into their new school forest this spring with teams of college students from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
The Environmental Education Studies students shared information on tree identification, characteristics of soil and rocks and birds in the springtime.

"This was a great opportunity for the students at UMD to have practical experience teaching lessons to students of various ages," said BJ Berg, dean of students at South Terrace Elementary. "It was also a wonderful opportunity for the students of South Terrace to learn about science in the outdoors."
Trails in the school forest were developed last fall by the Carlton High School Environmental Science students. Carlton School District is partnering with the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District to pursue grant money for development of outdoor learning stations, educational materials and training for teachers in the Carlton area.
