Voters in District II-Sawyer gave the nod of approval to incumbent representative Sandra Shabiash in Tuesday's Fond du Lac Reservation General Election.

Shabiash defeated challenger Russell Northrup by a vote of 122-99, according to Election Board Chair Lyman Lafave, earning 55.2 percent of the overall vote. Laface reported 221 residents of the Sawyer District voted in the election, including 178 on site and 43 by absentee ballot.

"I really appreciate all of the people who came out and cast their ballots, no matter who they voted for," commented Shabiash. "It shows that our people are involved, and I want to thank them as well as congratulate my opponent for a fine showing."

Shabiash, who has served the past four years as Sawyer-District II representative, emphasized transparency, equality, accountability, and stability of tribal government in her platform.

During her first four-year term, Shabiash helped oversee the construction of seven new houses in Sawyer and the restructuring of the Sawyer Center and was instrumental, along with other members of the tribal council, in adding upgrades to the elder complex and the hiring of 39 new reservation employees.

"Those first four years went by so fast, it seemed as though I was really just getting started," commented Shabiash, who said she was back at work at 8 a.m. the day following Tuesday's election. "We have some pretty major issues right now, and there's much to be done. I really enjoy what I do, however, and I'm grateful to be able to move ahead with it."

Among her future goals, Shabiash stated she will support the paving of Moorhead and Davis roads, the establishment of a trailway from the Sawyer Center to Highway 210, construction of a greenhouse and baseball field, increased employment opportunities and the expansion of usage of the Ojibwe language.

Shabiash will now serve another four-year term as District II-Sawyer representative.
